Valentine “Val” Wetsch, 86, of Bismarck passed away on January 13, 2018. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Corpus Christi Church in Bismarck with Reverend Paul Becker officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. on January 18, 2018 at Bismarck Funeral Home and one hour prior to funeral services on January 19th.
Val was born on his family’s farm south of St. Anthony, ND on July 3, 1931 to Anton and Magdalena (Hatzenbuhler) Wetsch. Val attended school in St. Anthony and worked on the family’s farm after completing the 8thgrade.
Val met Darlene Seeley in 1954 after offering to drive his sister and her friend to a local dance. After exchanging many letters, a few months of dating, and a draft notice they were married at St. Joseph’s Church in Mandan on September 21, 1954.
During the Korean War, Val served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. Many years later he was honored to be part of the WDAY Honor Flight and enjoyed his visit to Washington, D.C. with is brother-in-law Frank Boehm.
Returning home after the war Val and Darlene settled in Bismarck and started raising a family including Ron (1956), Tim (1958) and Valerie (1968). Val worked for Sweetheart Bakery for many years retiring to find that a life of leisure did not suit him. In later years he worked for Burleigh County Housing as an inspector and made many great friends.
Val was a devoted husband and father. He delighted in his eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren and savored every moment he spent in their presence. As a father he was a gentle guiding force who shepherded his children through the highs and lows of life. He dearly loved his brothers and sisters who were his very best friends.
Surviving Val is his wife of 63 years, Darlene, his children and their spouses, Ron and Linda Wetsch, Tim and Laurie Wetsch, and Valerie and Bill Sievert; his six grandsons and two granddaughters Mike (Jessy), Brandon (Catherine), Chris (Kristin), Tyler (Ashley), Ashley (Derrick) Hertz, Adam (Kristine), Jordan Sievert and Tommy Sievert; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Val is also survived by his sisters and their husbands, Angie and Frank Boehm and Loretta and David Erhardt; sisters-in-law, Leona Wetsch, Carol Wetsch, Rochelle Wetsch, Lois Seelye, Donna and Terry Kraft; and many beloved nephews and nieces and their children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents Anton and Magdalena, his in-laws Orville and Helen Seelye; his brothers and their wives Tony and Betty Wetsch, John and Genny Wetsch, George and Margaret Wetsch, Mike and Rose Wetsch, Jack Wetsch, Ray Wetsch and Eddie Wetsch; his sister Leona George; and his brothers-in-law Duane Seelye and Del Seelye.
