  [S927] Obituary. Note: From the Jasper Herald: "Jacob J. Alles Dies of Apoplectic Stroke - An apopleptic stroke, suffered while hunting on Thanksgiving Day, proved fatal on Wednesday morning to John Jacob Alles. He died at his home on west Ninth street at 10:15 o'clock, at the age of 57. Mr. Alles, who was employed as night watchman at the Jasper Seating Company, had eaten breakfast Thursday morning after coming home from work, after which he went hunting in the vivinity of Ireland, in company with a son, Norbert, and Frank Schwenk. The trio had been hunting for some time when Mr. Alles walked over to Mr. Schwenk and complained that one of his arms hurt. A short time later he said, "Frank, you'll have to take care of me," and lapsed into unconsciousness. Mr. Schwenk, assisted by Mr. Alles' son, carried the unconscious man to the car and brought him to his home here. He was conscious at intervals until Saturday afternoon, but was unable to talk at any time. On Saturday afternoon he lapsed into a coma, from which he never emerged. His condition became gradually worse until the time of his death. He suffered an apoplectic stroke on Septemeber 20, 1938, but was back at work within a week. Mr. Alles was born on February 10, 1884, the son of former County Commissioner Fred Alles and Mary Betz Alles. Later the family moved to Marion township and here he received his education in what was known in later years as the Alles school. He helped his father on the farm, while not attending school, until his marriage. On September 24, 1913, he was married in St. Celestine's church to Miss Anna Rasche. The couple came to Jasper and Mr. Alles secured employment at the Jasper Novelty Works. He was employed there for twenty years, serving as foreman of the lumber yard. During the depression, he worked for about six months in the furniture factory at Dubois. At the time of his death he was employed as night watchman at the Jasper Seating Compay. Mr. Alles was a home-loving man and was very fond of his family. He was an industrious, honest citizen. Surviving are his wife Anna; seven sons, Pv. Hilary Alles of Camp Bowie, Texas; Oliver, James, Norbert, Jerome, Edward and Charles of this city; a sister, Mrs. August Wehr of St. Anthony; two half-brothers, John and Joseph Alles of St. Anthony;and three half-sisters, Mrs. Mayme Leonard of Indianapolis, Mrs. Robert Vonderheide of Jasper, and Mrs. Robert Wilson of St. Anthony.
