Helbling, 92, rural Mandan, died August 20, 2013 at St. Vincent’s Care Center, Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, August 26, 2013 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Johnson Kuriappilly as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 25, 2013 from 2:00-8:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 5:00 pm. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday. Jacob A. Helbling was born on July 23, 1921, on the family ranch southwest of Mandan. Jacob was the son of Peter V. and Rose (Renner) Helbling. Jacob lived on the family farm for nearly 90 years. He was raised and educated in the St. Anthony area. On October 25, 1949, he married Rose Boehm, daughter of Jacob J. and Julia (Stein) Boehm. Jacob (Jack) and Rose farmed southwest of Mandan on the Helbling Hereford Ranch established in 1914 by his father, Peter V. Helbling. Both Jack and Peter V. raised registered Hereford bulls and donated bulls to Home on the Range for boys. They also sold yearling Hereford bulls every year at the Kist Livestock Ring. This was a very exciting time for the family because all the cousins showed up at the sales ring. Special memories of Jack include his love of the land, his love for animals and pets, farming and raising Hereford bulls, hunting, enjoying old-time music, dancing, going to Polka Fests and traveling with his wife, Rose. Jack had a very sharp mind for history and family trees, and loved spending time with family and friends. Jack and Rose were known throughout the area for their hospitality. Whether it was a family gatherings, picnics or yard parties; food, fun, laughter and accordion music were always plentiful. His quick sense of humor and wit could entertain a room. Jack loved to dress up and be a clown and could rise to any occasion within minutes with a comment, joke or story. At one yard party, he dressed up as a nun and wore a white walnut rosary around his neck. He then danced to polka music with his son-in-law and grandkids. Jack was an engaging storyteller and conversationalist and loved to be the center of attention. Many happy family memories were made during these times. In later years, Jack and Rose enjoyed travelling. They travelled all over the US and extensively in Europe. One of the highlights of their travels was meeting Pope John Paul, II in Italy and having their picture taken with him. Jack and Rose spent many Sunday afternoons visiting older folks in nursing homes or at their homes. In July 2007, Jack was featured in a DVD sponsored by the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection entitled “Dakota Memories with Jacob A. Helbling.” Jack is survived by one son, LeRoy (Rosemary) Helbling, southwest of Mandan; daughters, Yvonne Hurkes, Bismarck; Sonja (Michael) Wiser, Vancouver, WA; Marlys (Donald) Rychlik, Mandan; Jacquelyn (Rey) Castillo, Sacramento, CA; Gloria (William) Fox, Vancouver, WA; 10 grandchildren, Lisa (Jim) Anderson; Nicole (Kirk) Jenson; Nathaniel (Shelly) Rychlik; Liz, John and Michael Hurkes; Emily (Josh) Castillo, Bryan and Eric Castillo and Jeremy Heiser; seven great-grandchildren; and on sister, Ida Robinson, El Paso, TX.
