John T. Rossner

A memorial service for John T. Rossner of McMinnville will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 21, in the First Presbyterian Church, 390 N.E. Second St., McMinnville. Rev. John Ailstock and Rev. Karen Renner will officiate.
Mr. Rossner died at his home, a victim of leukemia, on Wednesday, March 16, 2005. He was 61.
He was born in McMinnville, on Jan. 24, 1944, to Theodore and Frances (Duerst) Rossner. He spent his early life in town, graduating from high school in 1962. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in agricultural science in 1966 and a master's in seed management in 1968 from Oregon State University.
After studying the Indonesian language at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., he served from 1969 to 1974 as a missionary to Indonesia from 1969 to 1974. He met Astuti Rahayu during his service and they married on March 9, 1974, in Surabaya, Indonesia. He then returned to McMinnville with his new bride to join his father and brother on the family farm.
He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, where he had held the posts of deacon and elder, and served on a variety of committees. He also served several years on the McMinnville School District Budget Committee.
Mr. Rossner was active in the Farm Bureau on the county, state and national levels, serving as state president from 1995 to 1999 and doing a term on the national board. He was a past Seed League president and Oregon Food & Shelter board member. He also was actively involved with the Yamhill Soil & Water Conservation District and state Clover Commission.
He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Oregon Department of Agriculture in 2000 and the Meritorious Service Award from the Oregon Farm Bureau in 2001. Gov. John Kitzhaber named him to the Willamette River Restoration Project and the McMinnville Jaycees honored him with a Young Farmer Award in his earlier years.
Mr. Rossner traveled to Kyrgzstan in 1996 and spent three months helping establish a private farmer's organization through the Citizen's Network of Foreign Affairs. His interests included politics, travel, helping others and anything to do with trains.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Christina Rossner of McMinnville and Madae Fast of Tigard; his mother, Frances Rossner of McMinnville; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Greg, in 2001.
