Sister Celesta Rudolph, CDP, 90, of McCandless Township, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2012. Sister Celesta entered religious life from St. Walburga's parish in Pittsburgh's East End neighborhood in 1939. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Duquesne University and a master's degree in religious education from Spalding University in Kentucky. After doing some graduate work in German at Duquesne University, she attended the University of Freiberg/Breisgau, Germany, where she earned her PhD in modern German literature. In 1966, she joined the faculty of La Roche College, a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Divine Providence. She began in the humanities division and rose to the rank of professor, receiving many awards and accolades during her teaching career. Sister Celesta was named one of the Outstanding Educators of America (1971) and received a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant to study German Literary Existentialism at the University of Minnesota (1975). She was recognized by area corporations and universities for her work in translation and her tutorial efforts on behalf of individuals and groups. An intelligent woman with a love of learning, Sister Celesta was a humble presence to her sisters in community and her students. In 1986, she moved from the classroom and became archivist for the college, a position she held until 2004, at which time she was named archivist emeritus, moving to part-time ministry. She entered full retirement in 2009 and was engaged in the ministry of prayer. She was preceded in death by parents, Aloysius and Gertrude Mansmann Rudolph; brothers, Joseph, Gerard and Father Fred, SVD, and Alfred; and sisters, Margaret Hammond and Mary Collins. She is survived by sisters, Celine Miller, of Allison Park, and Theresa, of Glenshaw; sisters-in-law, Ruth, of Pittsburgh, and Marianne, of Conesus, N.Y.; nieces and nephews; and Sisters of Divine Providence and associates throughout the world. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from noon to 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Providence Heights. Wake service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral Mass at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Mother of Divine Providence Chapel.
