Carpenter, 79, died Sunday in DeKalb Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for 19 months. She had been in ill health for the past two years. Mrs. Carpenter lived at 723 N. Van Buren Street, Auburn for the past 11 years. She was married July 23, 1919 to William Carpenter, who preceded her in death on Aug 28, 1980. Born Sept 7, 1902 in Holmes County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Ferdinand and Philomenia Schortgen of Steuben County. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Frank (Jeanette) Herczeg of Mishawaka, Mrs. William (Elaine) Bonner of Olmstead, Ohio, and Mrs. Jon (Joyce) McDaniel of Auburn; three sons, Lee of Auburn, William of Crestline, Ohio, and Richard of Perrysburg; two brothers, Ignatius Schortgen of Wolcottville and Albert Schortgen of Waterloo; a sister, Sister Agnes Cecelia, a nun with Our Lady of the Angel order in Mishawaka; 26 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
