Kuntz, 88, Mandan, died Dec. 12, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Because of the remodeling project at St. Joseph's Church, the Liturgy will be celebrated at Spirit of Life Church. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4 p.m., a Mandan Moose Ritual at 6:30 p.m. and a St. Anthony Verein Rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a parish rosary/vigil. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. John was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Timmer, the son of Frank and Eva (Gerhardt) Kuntz, later moving to the Fallon area where he was raised and educated. On June 6, 1944, he married Cecilia Bullinger in Flasher. After their marriage, they farmed in the Fallon area for 10 years and in 1954 moved to Mandan. He worked for the city of Mandan for 32 years, in the water sewer and lights department where at his retirement he was a foreman. He was a member of the Mandan Moose, Knights of Columbus, Eagles and a long time member of St. Joseph's Church. For those having known John there are numerous memories to best describe him. These include, generosity, sense of humor, dedication to family and community, his work and his strong faith. When John walked into a room, it was common for him to know someone there, and immediately conversation and laughter would light up the room. In addition to his dedicated work to the city, he was a volunteer fireman for many years. This time at work and as a volunteer was hard work, especially in winter when break downs would most occur. He most of all loved his family, family gatherings, extended family, combined with his strong religious beliefs were always evident. After his retirement, a highlight for him and Cecilia was traveling throughout the U.S., having visited 38 states. In addition, those travels took them to Okinawa, Hawaii, Alaska and Cayman Islands. These trips of course, included visiting family and friends. In all of this, he took time to relax, doing some fishing, a talented woodworker, latch work, cross stitching. These memories will always be cherished by his family, friends and community. John will be greatly missed by his wife, Cecilia, Mandan; his daughters, Cecilia (Pat) Jordan, Twin Falls, Idaho, Carol (Robert) Earnst, Grass Valley, Calif., Claudia Wiedmann (Tom Whisteler), Wickenburg, Ariz., and Corinne Boes, Spokane, Wash.; his sons, Edward (Edith) Sacramento, Calif., Tom (Val) Coerd'Alene, Idaho, Ken (Kim) Gresham, Ore., Don (Kathleen) Spokane, and Randy (Jennifer), Mandan; 27 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his brother, Lawrence (Margaret), Rapid City, S.D.; his sisters, Anna Mary Beierlein, Betty (Lawrence) Renner, Gloria (Martin) Blasy and Eva (Larry) Steiner, all of Mandan, Sister Kathleen Kuntz, Richardton, Jenny Wetsch, Rapid City, and Tilly (Chuck) Hensley, Kingman, Ariz.; his brother-in-law, John Wetsch, Mandan; his sisters-in-law, Mary Kuntz, Bismarck, and Eleanore Kuntz, Philadelphia. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Frank and Eva; his son, John A. Kuntz; his brothers, Nick (infant), Jerome, Bill and Nick; and his sister, Rosemary Wetsch.
