He had a wonderful time with family and friends as they celebrated a beautiful, century-long life. OBITUARY Helmuth Neuharth 100 of Wessington Springs died Wednesday morning June 10, 2009 at the Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center. A Masonic Service was held Thursday June 11th at the Basham Funeral Chapel. Interment was June 12th at Prospect Hill Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Wednesday July 22nd at 2:00 pm at the United Church of Christ. Helmuth Neuharth was born May 12, 1909 on a farm north of Alpena in Beadle County to John and Eva (Broeckel) Neuharth. At the age of 6 months they moved to Alpena where he grew to manhood. He graduated from Alpena High School in 1928 and continued his education at Northern Normal now Northern State University in Aberdeen. He graduated with a 1year teachers certificate and taught rural school in Beadle and Jerauld counties for 3 years. Following this he and his father purchased the grain elevator business in Wessington Springs and operated it for 10 years. Helmuth was later employed with the city of Wessington Springs as City Auditor for 10 years. His interest turned to health care and he was the administrator of the hospital. He became involved in establishing Weskota Manor in Wessington Springs seeing it to its completion in 1965. He then became the Administrator of Weskota Manor for a period of 10 years. Helmuth had a great love for his community and its people and showed this by volunteering his time and talents to every project. On June 15, 1933 he married his school mate Dorothy W. Brandenburg. To this union four daughters were born. While in Alpena, he was confirmed in the German Congregational Church by Rev. H. Stroh in 1924. In 1934, he became of member of the Wessington Springs Congregational Church and now the United Church of Christ. He taught Sunday school and was superintendent of the Sunday school. He was on the church board and took an active part in the music of the church as a member of the choir and singing in quartets. Retirement followed with the enjoyment of golfing, and belonging to a camper club as well as his woodworking hobby. During the years, he became a 60 years member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. His 50 years as a Kiwanian were enjoyable and very fruitful. He was grateful for having shared his life with his three daughters Joan Dyrdahl and her husband Nels of Rapid City, SD, Sandra Hins and her husband Dennis of Nisswa, MN, and Janelle Ellis and her husband John of Newcastle, WY; six grandchildren Pamela VanCuren and her husband Jeffery of Stafford, VA, David Hins and his wife Holly of Farmington, MN, Corey Hins and his wife Angela of Brainerd, MN, Michelle Johnson and her husband Todd of Chandler, AZ, Jessica Ellis of Fullerton, CA, and Jordan Ellis of Newcastle, WY; eight grandchildren Alex VanCuren, Haley, Alec, Caden, Mattie, and Macyn Hins, Julia and Alice Johnson.
