  [S927] Obituary. Clara D. Synan, 95 of Zanesville, died 2:05 PM Wednesday, October 07, 2009 at the Primrose Retirement Community following a long illness. She was born Friday, September 11, 1914 in Zanesville, the daughter of Nicholas Joseph Malone and Genevieve Geraldine (Burkhard) Malone. She married Henry D. Synan on Monday, February 08, 1937 and was a lifelong member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. Clara was the grand niece of Bishop Nicholas Gallagher, a famous Texas Bishop. She began driving at the age of 12. She was a member of the Good Samaritan Charity Circle since 1941. Clara was an outstanding bridge player and a frequent winner of monthly bridge tournaments. She was a room mother for most grades for all five of her children and was a renowned cook known especially for her Sunday dinners. Clara was the oldest in her family of nine and helped raise all her siblings. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Clara is survived by five children: Mary Ann (John) Armstrong of Coshocton, Patricia (William) Potter of West Lafayette; Daniel (Carole) Synan of Troy; Joseph (Susan) Synan of Houston TX and Jane (Robert) Dutro of Lancaster, NY; 14 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; one sister: Alma Miller; three brothers: Joe Malone, Mike (Skip) Malone, and Pat Malone. In addition to her parents, Clara was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Henry D. Synan who died August 27, 2006; three sisters: Regina Quinn, Mary McCarty and Rita Wagner; one brother: Jim Malone and three grandchildren. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday, October 11, 2009 at The Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue where a Christian Vigil will be held at 5:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM, Monday, October 12, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church with Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, OP as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Olive Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Clara's name.
