EDNA M. ZAHM, 85, a resident of Kingston at Dupont Assisted Living Home in Fort Wayne since May of 2002, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008. A native of Huntington, she was born June 20, 1922, the eldest daughter of Eugene F. and Edith M. Zahm. A graduate of Huntington High School, at age 18, she began her career as a telephone operator for Indiana Bell Telephone Co., from which she retired in 1955 after being an instructor at the Marion, Ind. telephone exchange. Her experience was from the hand crank, eight party system, the personal "what number, please?", to the dial telephones. Before converting to automatic dialing, Huntington was said to have the largest PBX. (plug in board) remaining in the U.S. During World War II, Edna served as a long distance operator at Camp Atterbury. She was active in the establishment of the Communication Workers of America Union and served as the local Union Steward. She has been recognized as a telephone pioneer and is a member of the Telecom Pioneers. She was a member of the Delta Theta Tau Sorority, a 60 year member of the American Legion Post 7 Auxiliary, and lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Rosary Society in Huntington. Edna never married and is survived by three brothers, Eldon L. Zahm, Maurice E. Zahm, of Fort Wayne and Larry E. Zahm of Davenport, Fla.; and a sister, Virginia E. Glasson of Huntington. She was preceded in death by an older brother, Captain Richard E. Zahm, Army Air Corps, who was "killed in action" in 1943. Christian Burial service is 10:30 am. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 905 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, with calling one hour prior to service. Fr. John Pfister officiating. Calling also from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at C.M. Sloan & Sons Funeral Home, 1327 N. Wells St., Fort Wayne. Burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Huntington. Preferred memorials to Parkview Home Health & Hospice or St. Mary's Catholic Church, Huntington/ Masses.
