William was not employed at the time of the census. In 1920, William Singer (38) and his wife Emma (36) rented part of a two-family house at 211 South Ninth St. in Petersburg, Pike County, Indiana. William worked as a laborer in an oil field. His brother Alex lived a few blocks away. At the time of the 1930 census, widower William Singer (50) was a boarder with the Stiners family in Pinckneyville, Perry County, Illinois. He worked as a driller in a coal strip mine. His brother Alex lived in another section of the same city and also worked in a coal mine. According to Muth & Fox, William and Emma Singer had no children.
