  [S927] Obituary. Fred Bender Obituary Fred Bender, 86, Dies in California Fred Bender, 86, pioneer farmer of this area, southwest of McClusky, died December 7th in Lodi, California. Funeral services were held in Lodi where he had been living since 1944. Mr. Bender was born in Russia on December 28, 1875. He was married there to Phoebe Boschee and in 1901 they came to this country, settling at Mitchell, SD. In 1909 they came to North Dakota, settling on a farm northeast of Regan. They were parents of 12 children. Mrs. Bender died in 1918. Mr. Bender lived on the farm until 1943 when he and his family moved to Wilton where they lived for a year before moving to Lodi. He married Mrs. Margaret Schockenmeier in 1920 and they were the parents of two sons. Besides his widow he leaves the following sons and daughters, Mrs. George (Maggie) Brenneise and Theresa Dutt, both of Bismarck; Fred Jr., Regan; Mrs. Martha Hieb, Jamestown; Mrs. Tillie Buffington, Rock Valley, Iowa; Mrs. Emma Ashley, Boise, Idaho; Mrs. Justine Ackerman, Spokane, Wash.; Adolph and Alvin, Lodi, Calif.; and Edward, Los Angeles, Calif. In addition, Mr. Bender is survived by three step-children, Emil Schockenmeier, Utah; Mrs. Hilda Bender and Mrs. Emma Kangas, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; 37 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Adam Schauer, Bismarck, and Mrs. Edward Gessele, Mercer. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and three children. He married Philippina P BOSCHEE there in 1897. At age 26 Friedrich and Philippina BENDER with their children; Magdalena, Friedrich and Maria immigrated to America via the Port of Bremen, Germany on the 3rd of June 1902 aboard the SS "Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse", and arrived at Ellis Island, New York on the 11th of June 1902. Initially they settling at Mitchell, Davison County, South Dakota. In 1909 they came to North Dakota, settling on a farm northeast of Regan in Burleigh County. They were the parents of 12 children. Mrs. BENDER died in 1918. He married Mrs. Margaret SCHOCKENMEIER (nee HOCHHALTER) on 20th of October 1920 and they were the parents of two sons.
