He was born June 7, 1925 in Wheeling, WV, a son of the late Joseph and Helen Paulus Burkhart. George was a retired Die Maker with the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Martins Ferry Ohio plant, a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Bridgeport, a member of the Foresters and Bridgeport Eagles #995. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Alice I. Cross Burkhart on September 13, 2008, two brothers, Thomas Burkhart and Joseph M. Burkhart, a step-son, Garold J. Cochran, a step-daughter, Peggy S. O'Connell, a grandson, John Harvath. Surviving is his step-daughter, Janet (Joe) Vitiello of Shadyside, OH; one brother, Kenneth (JoAnn) Burkhart of Bridgeport; one sister, Helen "Mitzi" Wieczorkowski of Wheeling; seven grandchildren including Jeff Harvarth, Lisa Knox and Michael O'Connell all of Wheeling; 18 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 10, 2011.
