  [S927] Obituary. August Bender, 88, Bismarck, died November 26, 2005, at a Bismarck care center. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1:00 PM at First United Methodist Church in Bismarck. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 2:00 PM - 9:00 PM and Tuesday from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM at Eastgate Funeral Service in Bismarck. August was born on May 17, 1917, to Fred and Katherine (Guthmiller) Bender, on the family homestead at Long Lake, South Dakota. He was raised and attended school near Long Lake. On June 30, 1938, August married Loretta Doerr in Eureka, South Dakota. They moved to Bismarck where August attended Capital Commercial College. Following college, he took a job with Davis Chevrolet Garage for five years. He was then employed by the City of Bismarck Water Department for thirty-seven years. After his retirement, August and Loretta spent eleven winters in California. August loved to travel and he enjoyed gardening and raising flowers, especially roses. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Elks Lodge 1199. August is survived by his wife, Loretta of Bismarck; his son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Judy Bender of Texas; two grandchildren, Derek and Trinh Bender of Texas, and Andrea (Bender) and Michael Sims of Texas; one great-grandson, Matthew Sims of Texas; one sister, Emma Heupel of Aberdeen, South Dakota; and one brother, Alvin Bender of Rogers, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Fred, Albert, and Ervin Bender; and five sisters, Martha Dalke, Ida Hoffman, Alma Roth, Leah Human, and Marcella Heupel.
