GEORGE G. DAIS
George G. Dais was born June 14, 1896 eight miles northeast of Eureka, South
Dakota. He married Mary Nies on November 21, 1919 and they lived on the family
farm until the fall of 1956 when they moved to Eureka. George's parents were
George Dais, born in 1863 in South Russia, and Christina Gohl, born March 11,
1863 in South Russia. In 1889 they emigrated to the United States and settled
on a farm eight miles northeast of Eureka. They lived on the farm until 1923,
then moved to Eureka. George passed away in 1926 at the age of 63 and Christina
passed away June 18, 1949 at the age of 86.
George G. Dais has eight brothers and sisters, four of whom are still living:
Jacob, married Rosina Dais, died August 31, 1979; Katherine, married John C.
Dais, lives at the Eureka Lutheran Home; John, married Katie Ott, died in 1975;
David, married Elizabeth Miller, lives in Lodi, California; Christ, married
Ernestine Diede, lives in Eureka; Martha, married Ray Praegitzer, lives in
Lodi, California; Daniel, died in infancy; Benjamin, died at the age of seven
months.
Mary (Nies) Dais was born July 17, 1896 on a farm 14 miles northeast of Eureka.
She died November 26, 1967. Her parents were John Nies, born May 27, 1871 in
South Russia and Friedricka Kurle, born April 22, 1875 in Bergdorf, South
Russia. John came to the United States in 1889, Friedricka came to the United
States in 1885. They were married November 7, 1893 and resided on a farm 14
miles northeast of Eureka. John died July 2, 1943, Friedricka died September
19, 1956.
Mary (Nies) Dais had 13 brothers and sisters, six of whom are still living:
Christina, married Phillip Rueb, died in 1961; John married Johanna Fieock,
lives in Bismarck, North Dakota; Henry, married Amalia Dollinger, died in 1969;
Katherine, married Edward Goehring, lives in Eureka; Margaret, married Jacob
Fischer, lives in Ashley, North Dakota; Carl, married Mabel Qualley in 1930,
then Juliet Dakken in 1945, he died in 1961; David, married Martha Schrenk in
1929, then Dorothea Puhlmann in 1935, he died in 1973; Martha, died in 1969;
Jacob, married Martha Fauth, died in 1972; Leah, married Gustave Puhlmann,
lives in Ashley, North Dakota; Albert, married Maxine Johnson, lives in Long
Beach, California, Reuben, married Francis Puhlmann, lives in Eureka and
Walter, died in 1944.
George G. and Mary Dais were blessed with nine children.
Aaron, born April 9, 1921 married Lenora Schueler. They live in Lodi,
California and have two children: Darrel, deceased and Ronald.
Walter, born February 28, 1923, married Florence Schnabel. They have five
children: Dennis, JoAnn, Kenneth, Donald and Sandra. Florence died in 1984 and
Walter lives in Eureka.
Calvin, born October 5, 1924, married Lou Ella Schnabel. They have one son,
Lloyd Allen, and live eight miles northeast of Eureka.
Wilbert, born February 1, 1927, married Bernice Lorraine Sayler. They have
three children: Delilah, Gwendalyn and Pamela and live in Aberdeen, South
Dakota.
Alice, born August 13, 1928, married Lawrence Melvin Meier. They have seven
children: twins, Shirley and Sharon, Roy, Joyce, Cathy, Carla and George.
Lawrence died in 1965 and Alice lives in Eureka.
Marvin, born October 3, 1931, married Eileen Mary Schaefbauer. They have three
children: Marlene, Sheryl and Steven and live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Darlene was born March 3, 1934 and died April 24, 1934.
LeRoy, born May 16, 1935, married Hope Caswell They have five children: Bryon,
Susan, Terry, Craig and Linda and live in Denver, Colorado.
Mabel Darlene, born February 8, 1939, married Marvin Lee Cory. They have two
children: Cynthia and Sheila and live in Marion, Iowa.
George G. and Mary (Nies) Dais attended the Church of God 7th Day in Eureka,
where George is still a member.
George G. Dais has been retired for a number of years and lives alone in
Eureka. He enjoys listening to gospel records and spends many hours reading the
Bible. He also enjoys watching T.V. He has a small garden and does his own lawn
mowing at the age of 88.
