She earned a bachelor of arts degree in claasics from the College of St. Mary of the Springs, a certificate in theology from Providence College in Rhode Island and a master of arts degree in library science from Rosary College in Chicago, Illinois. She entered the novitiate of the former Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus, Ohio in 1942 and made her profession of vows in 1944, taking the name Sister Joseph Damien. She ministered at Newark St. Francis de Sales School (1944-1945), Steubenville Holy Name School (1945-1946); Columbus St, Mary of the Springs Academy (1946-1960) Then she moved to Mahon Health Care Center, Columbus in 1976. serving as a part time librarian at the Motherhouse until 1989.
