  [S927] Obituary. Gilbert Opp, 90, Eureka, SD, passed away Friday, June 23, 2017 at the Minnesota Veterans Home of Fergus Falls, MN. Graveside services with military rites are pending for August at the Eureka Cemetery. Gilbert was born June 30, 1926 at the Opp farm 20 miles NE of Eureka to Frieda (Pfeiffer) and Jacob D. Opp, Jr. He attended Odessa #2 Country School until the 8th grade and then assisted his father for 10 years raising grain and livestock on the family farm. Gilbert never married. He served his country in the United States Army, being inducted February 24, 1945. He was stationed in Korea and the Philippine Island of Luzon and received numerous medals. Following his honorable discharge on December 11, 1946, he enrolled in the Dakota Business School, Fargo, ND where he studied accounting. Over the years, Gilbert was employed in the field of accounting at Rolla, ND, Rapid City, SD, Gates Rubber Company in Denver, CO and Deibert’s Inc. in Eureka. In 2012, he relocated to Aberdeen, SD and since 2014 he lived at the VA Home in Fergus Falls. He was a member of the Fred Weller American Legion Post No. 186, Eureka, SD. Gilbert’s pastimes included hunting, fishing and playing cards. Gilbert is survived by sisters—Lorraine Mettler of Eureka, Gloria Gilbert of Rapid City and Geraldine (Gary) Schnabel of Yankton, SD; brothers—Milo (Arlene) Opp of Aberdeen, Reinhold (Diane) Opp of Brainerd, MN, Lawrence (Florence) Opp of Sioux Falls, SD, and Harry (Carol) Opp of Underwood, MN; Sister-in-law Genevieve Opp of Richfield, MN and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Gilbert in death was his parents, sister (Priscilla Schmitt), brother (Hilmer Opp), and brothers-in-law (Howard Mettler, Eugene Meidinger, Alvin Schmitt and Clyde Gilbert).
