HOWARD AND EUNICE METTLER Back row, left to right: Lance, Kevin, Daniel and Mark. Front row: Eunice and Howard Mettler. Howard Mettler was born February 15, 1925 on a farm twelve miles northeast of Eureka. He was the second son of Daniel V. and Mary "Bauer" Mettler. He received his primary education in a rural school in Odessa Township. There were never less than thirty students in attendance and all eight grades. Discipline was very strict and teachers were strongly supported by the parents. Howard attended Eureka High School and graduated in 1944. Eunice Heupel Mettler was born June 20, 1933 on the farm seventeen miles northeast of Eureka. She was the only daughter of Julius Heupel and Ida "Guthmiller" Heupel. She has one older brother, Royal, who lives in Rogers, Arkansas. She attended rural school in Petersburg Township. Eunice graduated from Eureka High School in 1950. Howard entered the Army in March 1945 and received his basic training at Camp Livingston, Louisiana. He was shipped overseas in October of 1945, and served in the Quarter Master Corp. He was a truck and labor dispatcher and served on the island of New Caledonia and Oahu, Hawaii. Howard was discharged from the Army at Fort Lewis, Washington with the rank of Sergeant in December 1946. Howard farmed with his father until the fall of 1947 when he purchased the Jacob Kuszmaul farm. This farm is located nine miles east of Eureka and is still the Mettler residence. Howard, an eligible bachelor, and Eunice, a single school teacher, were married December 21, 1950. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Krombein at the Eureka Baptist Church. A supper and reception was held at the Eureka Country Club after the wedding ceremony. The couple went to Minneapolis on their honeymoon. Howard and Eunice have four sons. Howard Lance Mettler was born February 16, 1952. He attended rural school for six years and then transferred to the Eureka Public School. He graduated from high school in 1970. He attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion and graduated with a BS in Business Administration. He lives in Aurora, Colorado and is credit manager for the N.B.I. Computer Company at Boulder, Colorado. Mark Miles Mettler was born February 11, 1953. He also attended the O and K Rural School and then the Eureka Public School. He graduated from Eureka High School in 1971. He attended the University of South Dakota and received a BS degree in Sociology and Physiology. He is a social worker for the City of Denver and lives in Aurora, Colorado. Daniel Wade Mettler was born January 9, 1961. He attended Eureka Public School and graduated from high school in 1979. He attended Mount Marty College at Yankton, South Dakota. He graduated in 1983 with a BS degree in Nursing. He married Karen Sundem on March 23, 1983. He is a nurse at the Sioux Valley Hospital and they live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Kevin Kyle was born October 10, 1963 at the Eureka Hospital weighing in at ten pounds and eleven ounces. He attended Eureka Public School and graduated from high school in 1981. He enrolled at Mount Marty College and graduated with a BS in Nursing in 1985. He is a registered nurse at the Beth Israel Hospital at Denver, Colorado. He lives in Aurora, Colorado. Howard has been a farmer all his life and is presently engaged in livestock and grain farming. He was County Executive Director for the McPherson County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office at Leola, South Dakota. He served the Department of Agriculture for 35 years and retired on March 3, 1985. He also helped organize the McPherson County Soil Conservation District. He was a charter supervisor of this district. He served on the school board for the O and K district and the Eureka Public School. He has also held various offices on the church council of the St. Paul United Church of Christ. He is a life member of the Eureka VFW Post 5126 and has held all offices in this post. He is also a member of the Eureka American Legion and the Chamber of Commerce. Eunice has been busy as a farmer's wife, homemaker and raising four sons. She has been active in various organizations and held offices in all of them. She belongs to the United Church of Christ Women's Fellowship, Farmerette Extension Club, 4-H Club, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and Eureka Hospital Auxiliary. She has served a three year term on the State Board for UCC Women's Fellowship. She attended the national meeting of the UCC Women's Fellowship at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is presently a Director on the State Board of the United Church of Christ. Howard and Eunice had a new house built on their farm in 1960 by carpenter Christ Dais and Sons. They presently reside on this 1,200 acre farm. They became members of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in 1951 and are still members of this church. They enjoy traveling and have been to all the Western States, Canada, Hawaii and some of the European countries. They hope to be able to do some more traveling in the future.
