According to the ship manifest of passengers, Melchior, as he was called, at the age of 19 yrs., came to the port of New Orleans March 10, 1854 (or 52?) on the ship MARTHA L. WARD"When he came to Belleville, he engaged in the brick manufacturing business. The firm was known as Holdener & Company, which in its time furnished the building material for numerous edifices in the central part of St. Clair Co. Later he sold out his interests in the business and took a trip to his native Switzerland, where he did not remain long. He longed to return to the great western republic with its active and prosperous people. Joseph Leo was born in Hanover, Germany, on December 24, 1829. At the age of 76, he died in Evansville, Indiana, on July 2, 1906. Died of chronic endocarditis at St. Mary?s Hospital. Death record at Book CH-4C Page 237. Joseph Leo was buried in St Joseph Cemetery, Evansville, IN, on July 4, 1906. Section 9 Lot 284 Grave 2.
