Notes:

St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church actually had two cemeteries that were used by the parishoners of the Church. The first cemetery was given to the Church by Peter Thiel in 1840. This one acre lot was located in the western half of lot 74 in the Town of Gates. Although usually refered to as being on Lyell Avenue, it was actually located on the east side of what now is Mt. Read Blvd. about a quarter of a mile north of Lyell Avenue. It seems that very few burials were made in this cemetery. In 1843, Bernard Klem gave the Church some land south of East Main St. in lot 50 to use a burial place. This is usually refered to as the Goodman St. Cemetery as it was close to Goodman Street. The exact location was just south of the corner of the present day Palmer and Breck Streets near the railroad tracks. After Holy Sepulchre was established in 1871, St. Joseph's Cemetery was closed. The Goodman St. Cem. was sold to the NY Central Railroad who wanted the land for a railroad yard. In April 1872, the ramains were dug up, put in boxes and shipped to Holy Sepulchre on the railroad. The fate of the persons buried in the Lyell Ave. Cemetery is not as clear. It is very possible that they were dug up at the same time as the other cemetery, but no one knows for sure. It is shown on a 1902 map as being between two properties owned by Mary McLaughlin and then in 1915, the old cemetery lot was sold to Mrs. McLaughlin. By 1920, the lot was part of a new housing development.

The witness to the 1856 marriage is Laurentz Wegman. The baptism record in 1860 of his daughter indicates he was born in Buffalo. He is records as John Wegman Jr. and was age 62 years and 6 months. He died of cerebitis, was born in Lancaster NY (just east of Buffalo), and was living at 88 Lake Avenue. Message: I have a little info on Baumans of Western NY. My acnestors were John/Johann Wegman and Margaret/Margaretha/MArgeret Bauman. John was born in Lancaster near Buffalo and Margaret was born somewhere nearby. On her children's birth certificates it says Irondequiot and Rochester (different times). I do know that she was related to a family near Minneapolis, MN who had a pig farm. My mother and grandmother traveled to MN in the 1930s to see the farm. Margaret had her first child in 1857 and her husband was born in 1834, so my Margaret should be around that era. Any info would be great.
On Oct 7, 1856 when Johann was 22, he married Margaretha Bauman, daughter of Anton Bauman (1809-) & Gertrude Aman (Feb 19, 1814-), in St. Joseph?s, Rochester, Monroe Co., NY. Born in 1835 in Irondequoit, Monroe Co., NY. Margaretha died on Jun 29, 1903; she was 68. Occupation: Homemaker.

Message:Hi there, my maiden name is Robin Wakeman I am orig. from upstate New York. My Grandfather was William Wakeman, but he was born William Wegman/Wegmann. Please keep in mind when these German people came over from Germany and the census and certificates and all were made out(hand written) The writers wrote them as they sounded not as they should of been. When I was in the DC Archives I found many of my relatives as Wakemans not Wegmans as they should of been. So my Maiden name is Wakeman, which should have been Wegman. Search for your family with an open mind and look for similar spellings.
