Jacob was born in Ilpesheim Rheinbaiern, Mar 31, 1830, resided on the Chaussee (the main road to - German translation) at St. Louis, son of miller Georg Altschuh from Ilpesheim (Ilbesheim) and Anna Marie Dreisigacker from Olpersweiler (Albersweiler). On Dec. 12, 1852 he married Anna Marie Keck, born Aug 9, 1831, in Dirmstein, Rheinbaiern, daughter of farmer Joseph Keck and Marie Bengel in Dirmstein, now residing 6 miles west of Belleville. His parents were Johannes Georg Altschuh, b 5 JUL 1810 in Ilpesheim, and Anna Marie Dreisigacker, b 18 Sep 1803. They married 12 Sep 1833. Jacob emigrated at the age of 15, to America under the protection of some older friends and settled in New Orleans where he was employed in a hotel for one year. (The Report of Passengers shows he arrived in the Ship - Caglioni, of which Rogers is master, on the 9th day of April 1847 from Havre.) He then came to St. Louis and learned the cooper's trade. He then followed this career in St. Louis and Belleville. Later he was employed at Ogle Station at his trade. His marriage, as mentioned above, was also noted. After the wedding, the couple went to farming on the farm of her parents, later owned by Conrad Keck (probably the brother of Anna Marie). They resided there for 8 years. In 1863, they came to Millstadt and he again took up the cooper's trade at which he was employed for the rest of his working life. At the time of his death, he was a member of Evangelical Zion's Church and was two times a trustee and once school director. The funeral took place from the home to the Village Cemetery, Rev. P. Wendt, officiating. He died 29 Dec 1908. Little more is known of Anna Maria Keck Altschuh, other than what is shown above and the following from her obituary: She died of an illness of some duration. Had she lived until today, she would have reached the age of 81 ears. Although mention is made of a longer obituary to be in next week's paper, there has been no record of this found.
