Eugene and Bernice Fischer

Eugene M. Fischer was born January 17, 1924 to Matthias and Kathrina (Hagel)
Fischer in Eureka. He has six brothers and sisters, Vivian Bundrock of Norco,
California; Irma (Mrs. Sylvin) Lokken of Angora, Minnesota; Ramona Kautz of
Sioux Falls; Harry Fischer and Jan (Mrs. Milbert) Neuharth of Eureka; and
Violet (Mrs. Bob) Delker of Annisten, Alabama.

Eugene's father, Matthias, was born May 19, 1899 and died September 4, 1962.
Kathrina was born May 25, 1899 and died December 26, 1983.

On October 7, 1945, Eugene married Bernice Meidinger, daughter of Albert and
Martha Meidinger of Eureka. Bernice was born November 3, 1923 in Eureka. She has
seven brothers and sisters, Elaine (Mrs. Art) Serr and JoAnn (Mrs. Lewis) Opp
of Eureka, Marie (Mrs. Jack) Job of Pierre, Florence (Mrs. Gene) Heningsen of
Tempe, Arizona, Mark of Tempe, Arizona, Wayne of Poel, Wyoming and Barbara
(Mrs. Jon) Jund of Jerome, Idaho.

Bernice's father, Albert, was born March 27, 1904 and Martha (Neuharth) was
born July 24, 1904. They are residing in their home in Eureka.

Eugene and Bernice are members of the Eureka Reformed Church where Bernice was
a charter member of the Eureka Reformed Ladies Aid. They have both taught
Sunday School and are active in church affairs.

Eugene and Bernice are the third generation farming their ranch located ten
miles southeast of Eureka. It has been the Meidinger family home for 100 years.
Bernice's grandfather, Adolf Meidinger, a native of Kassel, South Russia, came
to this country in 1884. After passing the winter in Menno, in the spring of
1885 they took the train to Ipswich and then traveled to the present site where
they filed a claim and put up sod buildings. They later constructed wood
buildings (of which the house still remains). In 1920, her grandfather retired
to the city of Eureka, and her father, Albert, took over. He owned and operated
the ranch until 1947 when he and Martha moved to Eureka and began a business.
At that time, Eugene and Bernice began ranching there.

They now own 2,380 acres of land, consisting of diversified farming and
ranching.

Eugene and Bernice have three children, David Gene, born September 15, 1951;
Judith Ann, born July 21, 1954; and Debra Fay, born January 25, 1960.

David is engaged in combining and trucking. He lives in Eureka and has one
daughter, Lana Kay.

Judith is an English teacher at Valley High. She is married to Wayne Olson and
lives in Des Moines, Iowa. They have one son, Matthew Wayne.

Debra works in personnel for K-Products. She is married to Sid Sandbulte and is
living in Sioux Center, Iowa. They have one daughter, Katie Lynn.

Eugene and Bernice enjoy traveling, theater, sports and visiting their children
and grandchildren.

ALBERT AND MARTHA MEIDINGER Front row, left to right: Barbara, Martha, Elaine, JoAnn and Wayne. Back row: Mark, Marie, Albert, Florence and Bernice. Albert and Martha (Neuharth) Meidinger were married on October 7, 1923 and lived on a farm seven miles east and two miles south of Eureka. They raised a family of eight children: six daughters and two sons. They are: Mrs. Eugene (Bernice) Fischer, Eureka, who has three children, David Judy and Debra; Mrs. Art (Elaine) Serr, Eureka, who has two sons, Steve and Tim; Mrs. Elroy (Marie) Job, Pierre, South Dakota, who has three children, Tom, Susan and Robert; Mrs. Gene (Florence) Henningsen, Tempe, Arizona, who has four children, Paul, Peter, Eric, and Mary; Mrs. Jon (Barbara) Jund, Jerome, Idaho, who has four children, Shane, Joel, Shelly and Ryan; Mrs. Lewis (Jo Ann) Opp, Eureka, who has two children, Craig and Amy; Wayne Meidinger, Powell, Wyoming, who has one son, Lonnie; and Marcus Meidinger, Tempe, Arizona, who has two children, Mark Jr., and Tina Marie. The Meidingers have 14 great grandchildren. Albert, the son of Adolf and Barbara Meidinger and Martha, the daughter of John G. and Katherine Neuharth farmed for 24 years until 1947 when they moved to town where Albert operated a Standard Station for a number of years. They later built and operated a Drive Inn during the summer months for 16 years. Albert also served as McPherson County Auditor three years, the Eureka City Council, the Agricultural Stabilization Committee, the Eureka School Board and was a member of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce. Martha was in charge of the Eureka Public School lunch program for 13 years, was a member of the Legion Auxiliary, was a Girl Scout leader for many years and is presently a member of the Eureka Hospital Auxiliary. They are members of the Eureka Reformed Church. Albert served as a Sunday School Teacher at the farm church and Martha has been active in Ladies Aid and was also a past president. The Meidingers are presently living in Eureka, are retired and generally spend part of the winter months in Arizona.
