Richard Hoff was born December 8, 1927 to Jacob M. and Martha (Strobel) Hoff. He served in the U. S. Army for two years during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 in the Signal Corps. Richard and DeLores Nitschke were married June 7, 1953 at Ashley, North Dakota. DeLores was born April 3, 1935 at Lehr, North Dakota to John Ernest and Emelia (Schaffer) Nitschke. She graduated from Ellendale High School in 1952. Richard and DeLores made their home on a farm seven miles east of Eureka in Odessa Township, beginning in 1953 to the present time. They are members of the Eureka Reformed Church for which Richard was deacon for six years and treasurer for five years. The Hoff's had four children: Gerold, Richard, Scottie and Kathleen. Gerold Richard, born May 22, 1954, married Cindy Brinkmeyer. They have two daughters, Karen and Alison, and reside in Washburn, North Dakota. Richard Duane (Dickie) was born April 23, 1956 and died July 16, 1964. He was killed when a window fell and broke his neck. He was only a child of eight years but many times surprised his parents by doing things in an adult way. Scottie Keith, born June 26, 1961, married Melinda Rau. They have one daughter, Heather Sue, and live on the family farm. Kathleen Marilyn, born May 16, 1963, married Mark Bentz. They have one daughter, Janine Kathleen, and live on a farm near Artas. ARTHUR AND AMELIA HOFFMAN Arthur Hoffman was born August 16, 1904, and passed away December 16, 1973. Arthur and Amelia Thurn were married June 6, 1926. Amelia was the daughter of George Thurn and Freidreka Nelhick. They have two children, Dr. Marvin D. Hoffman and Mrs. Ardy Craig, and five grandchildren, Doug and Dave Hoffman, and Carl, Bob, and Cheryl Craig.

    JACOB AND MARTHA HOFF Jacob and Martha Hoff Jacob M. Hoff was born in Kassel Township in McPherson County to Michael and Katherina (Gohl) Hoff September 4, 1899. His father, Michael Hoff, was born in Kassel, South Russia on August 31, 1865. He came to America as a lad of fourteen, with his parents, two brothers and three sisters. The family arrived at Yankton, Dakota Territory, in June of 1879. He lived there with his parents until 1889, when he came to a place nine miles east of Eureka to homestead. Katherina came to the United States as a six month old child, where she grew up in the Long Lake area. She dedicated her life to her family of ten children. Jacob attended grade school for a few years and then was taught the basics of farming by his father. He married Martha Strobel December 18, 1924. Martha was born in Gluckthal Township to Jacob and Barbara (Beiber) Strobel. Her parents were both born in South Russia. Her father spoke Russian, German, and English fluently, he had learned them in the Russian schools. Her mother died when she was 18 months old. She spent her adolescent years helping her widowed father raise five brothers and sisters. Martha attended grade school and the Lutheran College in Eureka. She then attended the Normal College in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She earned her way through college by working as a maid. She taught school for some years and she also did the bookkeeping for her father's implement and grocery business. They farmed some of the original homestead land nine miles east of Eureka. They retired in Eureka, in October of 1956. The Hoffs spent only one night together in their home in Eureka when she became ill, was hospitalized and died October 17, 1956. Jacob passed away on his 82nd birthday, September 4, 1981. The Hoffs had four children: Gertrude Kimm, Blue Earth, Minnesota; Richard and Raymond, both farmers east of Eureka, and Mrs. Henry (Bernice) Oster, Eureka. The Hoffs' church affiliation was Reformed. OTTO P. AND ALBINA HOFF Otto and Albina Hoff Otto Hoff was born March 2, 1902 in Rosenthal Township, Eureka, South Dakota. He was the son of Jacob P. Hoff and Katherina Pfeifer Hoff. Otto grew up on the farm where he was born the youngest of six brothers and two sisters. He was united in marriage to Albina Adam March 20, 1923, the daughter of George Adam. They lived on a farm seven miles southwest of Eureka on the Adam farm until 1937. They were forced to leave the farm due to the drought in the thirties and moved to Eureka. Otto repaired machinery and became a welder, later on he again became involved in farming. Otto passed away October 20, 1969 at Eureka. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Albina Adam Hoff's parents, George Adam and Magdelina Schlaht Adam emigrated to America from Russia in 1885 when George was nine years old.

    ARTHUR AND PAULINE (BECK) STROBEL

    Arthur Albert Strobel was born June 8, 1909 in Eureka, South Dakota to Jacob
    and Marie (Bieber) Strobel. He was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran
    Church. After he graduated from grade school in Eureka, his parents moved back
    to the farm, which was located four miles north of Eureka. Art married Pauline
    Beck on November 9, 1930. They lived on the farm with his parents. When his
    parents moved to Eureka, they stayed on the farm, eventually buying the farm.
    They were members of the Zion Lutheran Church. Art served on the church council
    for three years, and was president of the council for one year. Art and Pauline
    had five children, all born in McPherson County. Ardella Joan was born
    September 11, 1931, Carol (male), born August 28, 1932, he died four hours
    later, Marcella Mae born October 2, 1937, Mildred born 1938, lived one day, and
    Mary Ann born January 10, 1939, died two days later.

    Ardella graduated with a B. S. degree in Medical Technology from the University
    of South Dakota in Vermillion, and is presently employed as Laboratory Manager
    of the Coagulation Laboratory at the University of Minnesota Hospital in
    Minneapolis. She was married to Delmont Bennett September 3, 1953 and is now
    divorced. They had one child, Jaimie Pauline who was born April 11, 1958 in
    Seattle, Washington. She graduated with a B.S. degree in nursing at the
    University of Minnesota, where she is presently employed at the University
    Hospital.

    Marcella graduated with a B.S. degree in Home Economics from the University of
    Washington in Seattle, Washington. She married Duane Bruce Lemmon September 15,
    1962 in Eureka. Duane has a Masters Degree in Agriculture from North Dakota
    State University in Fargo. He is currently employed as a Loan Officer by the
    First National Bank in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. They have two children. Marcia
    Jan born July 23, 1963 in Detroit Lakes, graduated with a B. A. degree in
    Mathematics and Physics from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota and is
    presently a graduate student in Engineering at the University of Minnesota.
    Karla Sue was born January 16, 1972 in Detroit Lakes.

    Art and Pauline retired from farming in 1969 and moved to Eureka because of
    Art's poor health. He died at the University Hospital in Minneapolis on July 7,
    1978. He had been ill for many years with coronary artery disease. Pauline,
    presently living in Eureka, was born October 7, 1909 in Artas, South Dakota to
    Johannes and Emilie (Fritz) Beck. She was baptized in the Hoffnungstal Lutheran
    Church. At the age of four, she moved with her family to a farm seven miles
    north of Eureka. She was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka.

    Art's grandparents, Johannes and Dorothea (Maier) Strobel, came to the United
    States with their three children; Jacob, John and Fred, on the ship EMS to the
    Port of N.Y. on May 16, 1885 from Gluckstal, Russia. Their daughter, Fredericka
    (Mrs. Johann Ritter), came to the United States in the fall of 1884 with her
    husband and son, John. Johannes was born August 24, 1839 in Gluckstal, Russia
    to Johannes and Anna Maria (Weber) Strobel. He married Dorothea Maier in
    January 1862 in Russia. She was born April 1840 in Hoffnungstal, Russia. They
    homesteaded with their three children four and one-fourth miles north of Eureka.
    Johannes was also a blacksmith. Eventually the three sons farmed within the
    same area, and also purchased several businesses in Eureka known as the Strobel
    Brothers. This included a hotel, store, elevator and a coal company. Eventually
    the brothers divided the business, Fred continuing the coal company, Jacob the
    hotel and grocery store, and John the equipment company which also included
    groceries, etc. John married Katherina Rempfer, and Fred married Karolina
    Bieber.

    Jacob Strobel was born January 3, 1871 in Gluckstal, Russia. On February 14,
    1893 he married Barbara Bieber in Eureka. She was born December 29, 1872 in
    Gluckstal, Russia to Johann Jacob and Christina (Ritter) Bieber. Jacob and
    Barbara had six children, the two surviving were Dorothea, married to Jacob
    Balliet, and Martha married to Jacob Hoff. Barbara died May 7, 1903 from
    childbirth complications and pneumonia. Jacob then married her sister, Marie,
    on November 17, 1903. Marie was born on November 16, 1886 in Eureka. From this
    marriage seven children were born, of which five survived. Matilda married Earl
    Thomas, with a second marriage to John Todd; Bertha married Jacob Teske; Arthur
    married Pauline Beck; Walter married Christine Gabriel; and Emma married Arthur
    Hausauer. After Marie died on January 12, 1916 of childbirth complications,
    Jacob married Pauline Karoch on August 30, 1916 at Eureka. She was born June
    18, 1880 in Poland. Pauline had several children from a previous marriage,
    including Adeline (Mrs. Ed. Hausauer) and Elsie (Mrs. Floyd Jones). From her
    marriage to Jacob, one son Elmer was born on June 25, 1919 at Eureka. He
    married Bernice Hall. Pauline died January 18, 1933. Jacob then married his
    fourth wife, Elizabeth Bieber (Mrs. Daniel Jundt), on June 30, 1934. She was a
    cousin to his first two wives. She had a number of children from her first
    marriage. She died June 28, 1952 in Bismarck, North Dakota. Jacob died June 10,
    1939 in Eureka.
